Cycles of Time

Sundial Innovation

‘Cycles of Time’ is an instrument to measure and display time. It has some innovations compared to the classical sundial as it shows four different cycles of time: 60, 20, 10 and 5 minutes. The special feature is that each cycle rotates in a different speed. The technique fully works on sunlight and the rotation of the earth.

Time can be read by these colour codes. Aligned stripes of the same colour represent a specific time notation. There are twelve codes which repeat each hour. Only the lower line will change colour since it´s the time cycle of the hours. So it total in can show 144 different time notations from 9 AM to 20 PM.

Cycles of time was the graduation project during my bachelor Design at AKV St. Joost in Breda, The Netherlands. It was awarded with a nomination of the St. Joost Medal, awarded annually for graduates of the academy.
